Collar

  Flat, nylon buckle collars are lightweight and inexpensive, which make them a good choice for your puppy's first collar. Place the collar on the puppy and let him wear it for a few hours each day. Check the collar's fit by placing two fingers between it and the puppy's neck. Let him get accustomed to the collar for a few days
  
  

Leash

  Purchase a lightweight leash 4 to 6 feet long. Attach the leash to his collar and let him drag it around. This will help get him accustomed to the weight of the leash on his neck as well as tugging when he steps on it.
  
  

Training

  Use a favorite toy or food to entice your puppy. Pick up the leash and place food or toy in front of his nose. Walk a short distance while holding the leash. Give the puppy the treat or toy when you have reached a set distance. Repeat throughout the day working for only five minutes at a time.
  
  

Socialization

• The first 16 weeks of a puppy's life is the critical imprint period so take him on short walks often to continue his leash training and get him socialized. The more places you take your puppy, the better he will be acquainted with strangers, sights, and sounds.
