Horse Racing Handicapping Tip Number 3 Think Like a Trainer in Claiming Races

If you are trying to make money handicapping horse races and betting on horses, then you should pay attention to claiming races.  Look at any race track's programs for a week and you will find that claiming races make up most of the races.  Year in and year out, while stakes races and handicaps get the bulk of the media's attention, it is claiming races that support most of the people who train and own horses.

If you are serious about making money betting on horses, then it is in your best interest to learn how to spot good bets in claiming races.  Making money betting on horses is a tough business and so is claiming horses and then trying to improve them and get a win, but there are men and women all over the country who do just that, year after year.

Nowadays, many programs and past performances supply stats for trainers including whether  he or she wins claiming races and if he or she is good at winning with a horse that has just been claimed.  But blindly betting the horses that parade through that conditioner’s barn will usually result in a loss over the long run even though he or she can turn a horse around.  The problem is that the whole horse playing world has access to that information and always bet a horse down when it starts first time or second time off the claim for that trainer.

So how can you make money betting on horses in claiming races?  How about thinking like a trainer.  Start watching the claiming races at one track and one track only so you can focus on those races.  As you watch the horses, make notes about how you think a horse's performance could improve.  For instance, if you see a horse turning its head and slowing in the stretch, perhaps the addition of blinkers would keep it focused on running and not looking for another horse to run with.

Then, if you see that the trainer has indeed made that addition of blinkers in its next race, you may note that the horse will improve and is a good bet, depending upon the odds, of course.  As you watch races, see what changes trainers have made and note how they affect the horse.  Then you will know what that equipment is for and how it may improve a horse.  As you watch races and make notes, you will see how certain jockeys manage horses and how that may help a horse's chances as well.

Training horses requires knowledge and skill, but it is knowledge and skill that anyone who is willing to work can acquire.  If you can really think like a trainer and apply that knowledge to picking winners in claiming races, you will be able to make money betting on horses.
