Dallas Cowboys Football History

38

    Early Years

    • The Cowboys failed to win a game in 1960 under coach Tom Landry. By 1966, Dallas had developed into a playoff team. The Cowboys lost a heartbreaking NFL title game on Dec. 31, 1967, to the Green Bay Packers in a game played in extreme cold weather in what became known as the "Ice Bowl."

    1970s

    • Led by standout players such as quarterback Roger Staubach and defensive lineman Bob Lilly, Dallas went to the Super Bowl five times from 1970 through 1978. The Cowboys won the Super Bowl in two of those seasons, and lost exciting games to the Baltimore Colts and the Pittsburgh Steelers twice.

    Landry

    • Landry was replaced in 1989 after coaching the team for 29 years. He left Dallas with 250 wins, but in his later years, the team began to take a downward turn. New owner Jerry Jones turned to college coach Jimmy Johnson for leadership.

    1990s

    • Under Johnson and then Barry Switzer, the Cowboys rolled to three Super Bowl wins in a four-year span from 1992 through 1995. New stars such as quarterback Troy Aikman and running back Emmitt Smith emerged to carry the team to the top of the league.

    Leaders

    • Aikman's 32,942 yards and 165 touchdown passes are Dallas records. Smith is the franchise's leading rusher with 17,162 yards as a Cowboy along with a team record 153 touchdowns. Michael Irvin's 11,904 receiving yards is the Dallas standard.
