Nut-Filled Phyllo Pastry - Baklava
In Greek: µpa??aß?, say: bahk-lah-VAH. Recipe for Baklava with Almonds & Walnuts (continued below)
Layers of wafer-thin phyllo (filo) dough surround a fabulous mixture of nuts and spices. As a sweet, rich dish that requires time and expense (ingredients are not inexpensive, even in Greece), Baklava considered a "presentation" dish and generally reserved for special occasions. It is not served as a dessert, but rather as a special treat. Baklava can be made with many different nuts, or a combination.
This version is made with almonds and walnuts, then drenched in a traditional sweet syrup after baking.
