Where Pie Began

55
When a person thinks of pie there could be several different thoughts that come to mind.
One person might think of Thanksgiving and the several different pie flavors there are to choose from.
Some people might think of a warm chicken-pot-pie on a cold winter evening.
Some people may just love baking and make different types of pie on a regular basis.
Pie is so common today that hardly anyone probably stops to wonder where pie originated.
But actually pie has a long heritage.
Before there was pie, there had to first be the development of bread and baking.
Bread hasn't been around forever, and when it developed it was a big deal.
Bread preserves longer than fresh food and is great for long trips (such as for sailors) and as a compliment to any meal.
After bread developed, then came the practice of stuffing the bread with something, and that was the creation of the first pie.
It began as a treat, filling a mixture of ground grain with honey.
That developed into pies being pastries and desserts.
From there the idea of pies went to Greece where they were used to wrap meat.
It was a great way to cook meats while keeping the moisture in and it was a great portable meal.
From there the idea spread throughout Europe and was slowly perfected until we got what we have today.
Sometimes the meat is still wrapped in bread for a portable meal.
Sometimes it is made in a dish, either with the top opened or closed.
Sometimes they are sweet, sometimes savory.
The development of pies is one that is great to have today.
